Haven't had poke in a couple of years since a certain poke bowl got me very sick. Nonetheless, I mustered up the strength to try it again, and went to Tidal Poke near my office.
Line wasn't so bad, and the woman running the line was helpful and told me what everything was. I ordered shoyu salmon with brown rice, mango, pineapple, masago, sweet onion, scallion, kani (imitation crab) salad, sesame seeds, crispy shallots, and umami shoyu sauce. Price point was solid, $10 for a bowl with one protein.
After I took my first bite, I realized that I really didn't have anything to fear. The fish was tender, with a strong savory flavor from the sauce. Adding in the extra kani salad allowed some additional saltiness. The fruit tasted fresh and complimented all of the fishy components with all of its sweetness. The remaining accoutrements: the masago, scallions and crispy shallots allowed for additional texture and color.
Thanks to this place, I was able to conquer my fear of poké. I'll need to add this into my lunch repertoire. -

Serving Size - Disgusting
Honestly not sure if they portion based on the size of their customer, but this has become absurd. The bowls they serve me are barely half full and the amount of fish that I'm being charged for; not even one scoop. Literally 8 small pieces and didn't even top off like they did with the 5 others ahead of me. I've been going once a week at random times and days to see if this persisted and after 2 months, I've seen the same thing. When I ask for more, I'm directed to get a large, which is ridiculous since they just served the others ahead of me at least one full scoop. And if you're going to lower the amount of fish, at least compensate it with the amount of rice or toppings.
For over $11.50, this is such a rip off. Should really consider hiring better staff and give more uniform and appropriate serving sizes.
AVOID unless it's a craving you can't satiate elsewhere -

I've been here a few times and here's what I think:
1. If you like raw fish, just go for the raw fish i.e salmon, tuna that are NOT marinated in any sauce. That's because the un-marinated raw fish are always fresher than the spicey/marinated raw fish. I have tried the latter once, and it was IMpossible to eat it. One could tell that the sauces are being used, creatively, to cover up the taste/smell of the less-fresh raw fish and I felt like throwing everything up. Honestly, I don't think this is good business practice, as I am sure others will figure this out too. And for those who don't, I think some may not feel so well after eating the less-fresh marinated raw fish.
2. The vegetable/corn/ginger add-ons are ok. The choices are adequate.
3. The price is $10-$15 depending how you mix and add. It's a reasonable price compared to Manhattan. -

Gross. I'm from Hawaii, and will eat pretty much any poke. Got the spicy tuna and was really fishy smelling (I know that sounds ridiculous), tasted gummy and stringy. I've never had this kind of tuna in poke before, it's definitely not the right type and maybe needed to be cut into smaller chunks. Had to throw away $10.
Leaving on a star for having spam musubis and Hawaiian sun drinks. Disappointing, was excited for a poke spot. The poke & ramen spot in the Newport mall food court is honestly so much better -

Poke bowls and quick service, I prefer to come here and order in line as opposed to ordering online as that seems to take longer or you have to wait until they address you especially at lunch rush hour. Otherwise it's pretty good and the fish is fresh.
